FedDev Ontario is Now Accepting Applications Under New Simplified Funding Streams

On November 30, FedDev Ontario announced that the Agency is now accepting projects using a single application and three simplified funding streams, which have been designed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs, innovators and communities. 

The Business Scale-up and Productivity stream will provide interest-free, repayable contributions to support globally oriented businesses that want to grow through the adoption of innovative technologies for increased productivity. The Regional Innovation Ecosystem stream will provide non-repayable contributions to not-for-profit organizations who contribute to fuelling an entrepreneurial environment that fosters innovation and growth. The Community Economic Development and Diversification stream will target investments in organizations or businesses in small communities who are working to develop, transform and diversify their local economies.

FedDev Ontario Supports More Women in Business

Communitech’s Fierce Founders Accelerator has received additional funding from FedDev Ontario to support a new cohort of women-led technology start-ups with seed funding. Participants of the program will also receive training, mentoring and business services, plus six months of free office space at the Kitchener location.

Previous FedDev Ontario funding helped Communitech establish the Fierce Founders program, which recognizes the unique challenges that women in business face. To date, 19 start-ups have been supported and over 60 new full-time jobs have been created. The Communitech innovation hub was founded in 1997 and was one of the first accelerators to focus exclusively on women in the technology sector.

FedDev Ontario Announces Additional Funding for Successful Programs

Funding to help more than 50 start-ups participate in Bioenterprise Corporation’s and Innovation Guelph’s programs was announced during the Innovation Expo showcase. The additional $2.28 million from FedDev Ontario will go a long way in helping both programs continue to support the growth and development of early–stage companies. The funding supplements FedDev Ontario’s original contribution announced in 2016.

Over 100 companies that had previously received seed funding and support through this programming showcased their offerings at a public trade show. The day also included a panel discussion led by women CEOs. Bioenterprise programming targets entrepreneurs who develop agri-food and agri-product, sustainable and environmental technologies, and Innovation Guelph focuses on advanced manufacturing and social innovation industries.

Government Extends Commitment to Enhance Business Confidence in Canada

On November 21, the Minister of Finance delivered the Fall Economic Statement in the House of Commons. The economic and fiscal update focuses on continued progress for the middle class and confidence in Canada’s economic future. Highlights include a further $800 million over five years to the Strategic Innovation Fund to accelerate the support for business innovation, and an investment of $184 million to enhance the Trade Commissioner Service and other federal capacity to support the growth and diversification of Canada’s exports. In addition, steps to support Canada’s competitiveness feature multiple business tax incentives and a venture capital program to bolster clean-tech innovations. Read the full statement here.

BURST Incubation Program Receives Additional FedDev Ontario Funding

TechAlliance of Southwestern Ontario recently celebrated the successes of the dedicated entrepreneurs supported through BURST, its incubation program. At the November 15 showcase event in London, FedDev Ontario announced an additional $440,000 to provide more early-stage, high-potential med-tech companies with seed funding, mentorship and other crucial support.

FedDev Ontario previously contributed $1.32 million to launch BURST. Since then, the program has worked with 30 companies over three cohorts, attracting more than $5 million in additional investment. The London Medical Network is also a key partner, providing matching seed funding for participants. FedDev Ontario’s Pavilion a Success at London’s Best Defence Conference

FedDev Ontario’s presence at this year’s Best Defence conference has been lauded with helping to increase participation and add significant value to the two-day event. The Agency’s Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) team organized a large pavilion to host two panel presentations, a supplier development workshop, two speed networking sessions and a speed mentoring event.

Members of the ITB team attracted global defence contractors and companies to the event—most of whom participated in the networking events. Several meetings resulted in defence contractors scheduling local site visits, providing additional opportunity to promote the region’s solid industrial and technological capabilities.

FedDev Ontario Helps Businesses Accelerate Growth in Southern Ontario

Since the launch of the Accelerated Growth Service (AGS) in 2016, FedDev Ontario has worked with more than 150 innovative southern Ontario companies in various sectors to accelerate their growth and increase productivity and global competitiveness. Chris Loranger, CEO of Plexxis, a construction estimating software company in Brampton, benefitted from FedDev Ontario and other AGS partners’ support through growth planning, quick access to financing and referrals to complementary companies—all of which have helped the company grow. 

AGS targets companies with a history of growth, annual revenues of $5 million or more and a focus on export markets. Companies receive access to government services to help accelerate growth, including financing and exporting, innovation and business advice. Contact us to find out more.

North Inc. Smart Glasses Backed by Additional Government Funding

The Honourable Navdeep Bains recently announced that the Government of Canada is investing $24 million in groundbreaking wearable technology developed by Kitchener’s North Inc. The company, formerly known as Thalmic Labs, recently unveiled Focals—smart and fashionable eyewear that features cutting-edge technology. North Inc. is already responsible for 300 patents. This investment, through the Strategic Innovation Fund, supports the type of research and next generation product development Canada needs to compete globally and create good jobs. North Inc. is now taking orders at two retail outlets and will be manufacturing the custom-built glasses at its facility in Waterloo. FedDev Ontario supported Thalmic Labs through a University of Waterloo program for start-ups.

Business is growing for the innovative agtech company that supplies cricket powder to the Loblaws chain. FedDev Ontario funding supported Entomo Farms through Peterborough’s Innovation Cluster.

Ontario Global 100’s semi-annual symposium drew FedDev Ontario officials and an impressive line up of business leaders who spoke and led panel discussions about risk, trade agreements and how to do business in a changing environment. The Ontario Global 100 network is dedicated to knowledge and idea sharing to support advanced manufacturers and exporters.

Peterborough’s Venture North hub recognized as a leader in fostering regional innovation. Since opening in 2016, the building is now home to the area’s key economic catalysts and its presence in the downtown core has sparked a flood of entrepreneurs and excitement to the city.

Humber College held its first Advanced Manufacturing Skills Consortium event and also announced several five-year agreements that will benefit the school and support the region’s advanced manufacturing ecosystem. The signing companies will provide advanced equipment and technology to be positioned throughout the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation.
