New session of Parliament begins with continued support for RDAs
With the Speech from the Throne delivered on December 5, the 43rd session of Parliament officially opened. Key priorities for the government include fighting climate change, strengthening the middle class, continuing the work on reconciliation, maintaining Canadians’ health and safety and positioning Canada for success in a changing global context. The speech emphasized the importance of regional needs and highlighted the government’s commitment to working with provinces, territories, municipalities and groups across the country so that all regions can realize their full potential.
Ministers in the new Cabinet received their mandate letters on December 13, with specific directions to make progress on these priorities. BioConnect’s mission is to provide biometric access control solutions to verify a person’s identity across physical, Internet of things and digital applications.
BioConnect focuses on new lab for advanced biometrics security solutions
BioConnect announced the opening of its innovation hub in Toronto to accelerate its security technology. BioConnect is a biometric technology and software company that provides identity management solutions for both digital applications and physical spaces. The premise of BioConnect Labs came about in response to the growing interest from both customers and partners to drive innovation at an increased pace. FedDev Ontario’s support has helped contribute to this Canadian technology success story.
GreenMantra takes traditional mechanical recycling a step above with its proprietary upcycling plastics processing technology.
GreenMantra epitomizes the circular economy model
Plastics Today recently spoke with GreenMantra’s VP, Technology and Business Development, Domenic Di Mondo, to find out how his company is contributing to a circular economy—one where products and materials are kept in use instead of being disposed. In a market where some companies try to capitalize by “greening” their brands, Brantford’s GreenMantra is living up to its name. The company’s successful circular economy business model gives new life to discarded plastics by diverting them from landfills and creating novel materials for a range of customers. The process is called upcycling, and its value lies in the way GreenMantra transforms the plastic into material with upgraded attributes, such as lower formulation viscosity for ease of processing and improved performance. GreenMantra received FedDev Ontario funding to support the commercialization of its proprietary technology.

Clear Blue Technologies CEO Miriam Tuerk found power in her tenacity to make her innovative clean energy company a global success.
Cleantech CEO’s passion for her work fuels company’s success
A career in electrical engineering was a clear choice for Miriam Tuerk. But, as a woman, the CEO of Clear Blue Technologies wasn’t always well-received during the early years of her company. Tuerk was recently interviewed by The Globe and Mail and described the path that led to her current position and achievements, including the installation of almost 4,000 solar power systems around the world—as well as the recent $1.2-million order for her Smart Off-Grid system in the Middle East and Africa. Tuerk and her husband—Clear Blue’s co-founder—are now successfully navigating the wireless economy and their know-how is delivering off-grid power systems to countries in need of clean and reliable power sources. Support from FedDev Ontario is helping Clear Blue Technologies scale up.

SONAMI gives industry access to resources and research to develop real-life solutions
The Niagara College-led SONAMI project is delivering early wins with two of its participating project partners. HydroChemPSC + CARBER, located in Wallaceburg, Ontario, is a mechanical service provider whose SONAMI project involves developing an enhanced monitoring unit to prevent welding explosions by detecting seal failures. A prototype has already been developed and the company is exploring adaptations for new applications. Lambton College’s Dr. Khaled Nigim is the key collaborator, providing the company with the necessary resources to support its research and development needs. Enhancing the Canadian experience in Prescott-Russell
Tourism is growing in Larose Forest thanks to a $350,000 contribution from FedDev Ontario through the Canadian Experiences Fund. With this funding, the United Counties of Prescott and Russell are creating a welcome centre chalet to offer four-season recreational tourism within its 11,000-hectare community forest. The goal is an enhanced experience for an increasing number of outdoor enthusiasts. The chalet will provide much-needed infrastructure, offering year-round multipurpose spaces for rent, rest and relief in the event of inclement weather. The Counties’ vision is to promote the forest as a fauna and flora observation site and preserve its natural and cultural heritage. First planted in 1928, there are now more than 18 million trees in the popular forest, sheltering a variety of wildlife and providing year-round trails for tourists from near and far.

Community Futures funding helps Perth company land contract with U.S. Navy
Knudsen Engineering has received $75,000 under the Rural Innovation Initiative—Eastern Ontario (RIIEO) to develop and commercialize an innovative new product that improves hazardous waste sediment analysis. The product—the Remotely Operated Sediment Profiler—is a modification of an existing line for scientific marine research. Knudsen will also use the proprietary software enhancements it developed during this project for its full fleet of products. Support for the rural company helped it secure a contract with the U.S. Navy worth up to $16.8 million. In addition, the project created two permanent jobs and three new intellectual properties. Knudsen is located in Perth, Ontario, and received the third-party funding through Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC). FedDev Ontario’s support for RIIEO projects through CFDCs recognizes the vital role rural communities play in the region’s economy.
