With New Funding and Dedicated Rural Support, FedDev Ontario Seeks Input for Building a Stronger Southern Ontario

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario, the Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Rural Economic Development, and MP Francis Drouin, were in Vars, Ontario, to announce over $1 billion in renewed funding for FedDev Ontario so we can continue to drive growth in southern Ontario. In addition, $100 million is being dedicated through our funding streams to support rural development by unlocking the region’s rural economic potential.

Minister Bains announces the $100-million funding at Nova Steel in Stoney Creek, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to supporting Canadian steel and aluminum workers.

New Government of Canada Initiative to Support Steel and Aluminum Workers and Businesses

As part of the Government’s new Regional Economic Growth through Innovation Steel and Aluminum Initiative, Canada’s regional development agencies (RDAs) will deliver $100 million over the next year to support Canadian small- and medium-sized enterprise steel and aluminum users. FedDev Ontario’s share of just over $39 million will assist companies in southern Ontario that invest in innovative projects to enhance productivity and/or competitiveness. By providing non-repayable contributions, this initiative will help reduce the impact of escalating commodity prices and other pressures, and will support approximately 300 businesses across the country. Contributions will range from $150,000 to $1 million.

FedDev Ontario Funding Gives Halton and Peel Businesses an EDGE

Minister Navdeep Bains announced a $1.5-million contribution to the Entrepreneurship Discovery and Growth Engine (EDGE) at Sheridan College to expand its services to the region’s entrepreneurial community. The innovation hub, located in downtown Mississauga at the Hazel McCallion Campus, houses a bright and collaborative space for networking, mentoring and skills development. Previously, EDGE services were available to student-led projects. With support from FedDev Ontario, entrepreneurs from the surrounding regions will be able to take advantage of the variety of resources offered to help their businesses grow.

Conavi Medical’s Cutting-Edge Imaging Systems Help Cardiovascular Patients

Conavi Medical Inc. received over $3.9 million from FedDev Ontario to increase its capacity to produce and market its innovative catheter imaging systems. Conavi Medical will add 8,000 square feet to its Toronto facility and will install advanced manufacturing equipment and software. The company has developed two new imaging systems that enhance visualization to help cardiologists provide precise treatment for better outcomes during cardiovascular procedures. As a result of this contribution, Conavi will create 61 new highly skilled positions, leverage additional funding and better position itself in the global marketplace.

Following the Numbers to Better Business Paths

Knowledge is power! Thanks to an $882,000 contribution from FedDev Ontario, Daisy Intelligence will be able to increase its capacity to help its customers make better business decisions. The company’s cloud-based AI platform benefits a variety of sectors, including the retail and insurance industries, by analyzing vast amounts of data that identify valuable information like purchasing preferences and fraudulent claims. The funding will also support the company in creating up to 29 new highly skilled jobs, as well as scaling up its operations to increase its presence in Canada and around the world.

As part of the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, Ryerson University was selected to lead a network of partners and stakeholders to deliver the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (WEKH), a one-stop source of knowledge, data and best practices for women entrepreneurs. On March 7, Ryerson’s Diversity Institute put a spotlight on women entrepreneurs at the Business, Government Services and You event in Toronto. Delivered in partnership with FedDev Ontario Small Business Services, the event included exhibits, seminars and an interactive panel discussion, providing an opportunity for participants to interact directly with government officials and Diversity Institute’s national network of regional hubs.

Space Company CEO Earns Stardom as Trailblazer Award Finalist

Thoth Technology Inc. CEO Dr. Caroline Roberts was recently recognized as a finalist for the 2018 TELUS Trailblazer Award, as part of the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards, spotlighting leading female entrepreneurs. The awards are organized by Women of Influence, who promote the advancement of women in the workplace. Thoth Technology Inc., which was founded by Dr. Roberts in 2001, supplies specialized services and products to the space sector. As part of its research, Thoth collaborated with the University of Toronto to commercialize real-time radio signal processing. The partnership was part of SOSCIP, which is supported by FedDev Ontario.

SOSCIP Project Partners Will Train System to Automate Video Content Categorization

In the age of misinformation and fake news, demand for credible video content is growing. Enter Vubble, a women-led next-generation digital media company that uses artificial intelligence to provide customized and curated video content from reputable sources. Co-founders Tessa Sproule and Katie MacGuire are working with Professor Vida Movahedi from Seneca’s School of Information and Communications Technology, to design a system that automatically categorizes and labels video content. According to Prof. Movahedi, video curation is increasingly important, particularly for younger audiences. “In addition to finding interesting content more easily, this generation needs to watch more quality videos,” she says. FedDev Ontario supports SOSCIP projects, which bring together industrial partners and academic researchers.

Plum Gets the Job Done with Personalized Predictive Hiring Technology

With a goal to eliminate bias and uncertainty, Plum co-founder and CEO Caitlin MacGregor, is proud of the company’s recruiting platform that measures a range of abilities to identify competent job candidates. Currently in use by the University of Waterloo’s co-operative education program, Plum’s Ultraviolet software relies on artificial intelligence and industrial-organizational psychology to help companies pick the best person for the job. In its early stages, Plum received up to $483,480 from FedDev Ontario. Today, the company employs 21 people in Waterloo and boasts a relationship with German software giant SAP, which invested in Plum and offers the platform in its app store.

Local Support Helps Keep Shelves Stocked with Natural Skincare Products

Necessity was truly the mother of invention when it came to Mame Faye and the launch of Eden Organyx. The owner developed her own line of skincare products because of a sensitivity to other mainstream products. Faye’s growing company offers 100-percent-natural products for the whole family. Eden Organyx was recently selected by Costco as part of its Local Entrepreneur Vendor program, and the skincare products will soon be available at select stores. Grand Erie Business Centre, which receives funding from FedDev Ontario, has played an important role in providing critical access to financing that is helping Eden Organyx meet production demands.

Bayview Yards Cleantech Tenant Offered a Deal on Dragon’s Den

Alida Burke and Corey Ellis, founders of Growcer, recently caught the attention of the Dragons! The young entrepreneurs, who received support to scale their hydroponic farming solutions business through Invest Ottawa’s Accelerator program at Bayview Yards, appeared on an episode of Dragon’s Den where they wowed the investors and were offered a $250,000 deal. More than 250 people attended a special viewing party at the FedDev Ontario-funded incubator to celebrate. The containerized growing systems are made from shipping containers and come with everything to grow produce year round—even in the toughest climates. To date, 14 modular farms are operating across Canada and the United States.

FedDev Ontario-funded Pond Technologies Inc. has finalized its acquisition of Regenurex, the Canadian manufacturer of astaxanthin, resulting in an amalgamation with Pond Naturals. The growing subsidiary will manufacture and distribute this and other nutraceutical products derived from algae.
