FedDev Ontario Invests in Manufacturer with Bright Future
The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, recently announced a $2.1-million FedDev Ontario repayable contribution for GVA Lighting, Inc. to help the company implement innovative technologies and processes, supporting clean-growth manufacturing in southern Ontario. GVA Lighting’s scale-up includes a new 98,000-square-foot facility in Oakville that will accommodate improved product design and testing. The company, which has been in business since 1997, produces leading-edge, energy-efficient LED lighting systems for commercial properties. The systems are designed to withstand extreme conditions. GVA Lighting expects to add up to 49 full-time jobs as a result of the expansion. The company is also participating in the Government’s Accelerated Growth Service initiative.

Minister Bains' Southwestern Ontario Tour
Minister Bains recently made a stop at Toyota’s automotive plant in Cambridge to talk about the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The Minister outlined how the Government is working with the automotive sector to support its suppliers and workers. The final terms of the agreement have yet to be completed.
The Minister also visited the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) at the University of Toronto to announce an investment of $25 million through the Strategic Innovation Fund. CDL’s research focuses on science-based start-ups, providing key resources and business supports to help them be successful. CDL works with a broad network of universities and aims to boost its engagement of young women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Government of Canada is Empowering Women in Business
The Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES) was the centrepiece of Budget 2018. On October 19, details were launched about how to apply for available funding. Regional development agencies in Canada will support the delivery of WES through two key program components: the WES Ecosystem Fund and the Women Entrepreneurship Fund. The WES Ecosystem Fund will be delivered over five years and will help not-for-profit, third-party organizations provide women-led businesses with access to the services and tools they need to launch and grow. The second fund is a two-year Women Entrepreneurship Fund that will invest directly in women-led businesses that pursue growth and export-oriented projects.

FedDev Ontario Joins Conversation at WE Talk Partners’ Roundtable
As part of the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) is providing a series of WE Talk Business Boot Camps to support female-led businesses that want to grow. The boot camps are delivered as one-day workshops providing practical advice on leadership, growth strategy, financial literacy, sales, marketing and human resources. In October, FedDev Ontario Business Development Manager Jane Schepansky was in Burlington to meet with partners, including Export Development Canada, Angel One, Haltech, Canadian Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Women in Business and Food Starter, to discuss ways to best support women entrepreneurs.

All three companies earned a spot in the fifth cohort of the FedDev Ontario-funded Fierce Founders Accelerator program, which is currently underway.

FedDev Ontario Supports Vision of Collingwood Glass Manufacturer
AGNORA glass manufacturer produces the largest customized architectural glass in North America. Shortly after its beginnings in 2011, the company received almost $4 million in FedDev Ontario funding to expand its plant. The expansion included the installation of new machinery and software, as well as a research and development lab to help incorporate cutting-edge technologies to better compete on a global scale. Since then, AGNORA has grown from six to 70 employees, and its client roster includes the likes of Microsoft, Kansas University and Dior. An investment in advanced digital technology allowed the company to use a 2D printer—that etches designs in ceramic ink on glass panels— to create a mural for Kansas University.
