This summer we celebrated FedDev Ontario’s 10th anniversary! Established in 2009, the Government of Canada created our Agency to promote the development of a strong and diversified southern Ontario economy. Over the past decade, we have become a trusted federal partner by providing targeted programming to advance the interests of the region and contribute to the vitality of its communities. Our achievements reflect the dedication and commitment that our Agency has to strengthening southern Ontario’s capacity for innovation, economic development and growth. We are pleased to have served the region for the past 10 years and look forward to many more.

Canadian SME Business Magazine aims to empower small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the knowledge they require to be successful. The magazine offers influential writings from experts in various fields and interviewed FedDev Ontario Deputy Minister James Meddings about the essential role the Agency plays in southern Ontario. In the interview, the Deputy discusses the Agency’s key objectives such as ensuring long-term economic prosperity for the region and supporting SMEs to compete globally through the commercialization of new technologies. Our new, restructured program streams were designed to meet the needs of innovators and job creators, targeting companies that are ready to scale up and invest in leading-edge technology. This focus is resulting in our support of impressive pivotal projects that will ultimately contribute to a stronger and more dynamic innovation ecosystem, create and maintain highly skilled jobs and improve southern Ontario’s competitiveness on the global stage. Two examples are the Scale-Up Platform and the Quantum Valley Ideas Lab. Northumberland CFDC Executive Director, Wendy Curtis, is proud to launch DELIA—a new program to advance women-owned and women-led businesses across Eastern Ontario.

Northumberland’s Wendy Curtis: A Woman of Influence

When it comes to movers and shakers in community economic development, Wendy Curtis stands front and centre. The high-energy Executive Director of Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) is responsible for leading a number of progressive programs and services out of Cobourg’s Venture13 innovation and entrepreneurship centre, including DELIA, its latest venture. Curtis was featured on myFM radio, providing an opportunity to talk about how her vision is creating a vibrant and growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. FedDev Ontario supported the CFDC’s successful N1M program for high-potential start-ups, as well as the Collaborative Economic Development Projects initiative, which was pivoted to be industry-focused with excellent results. Northumberland and 14 other CFDCs are now benefiting from a $15 million investment to support the Rural Innovation Initiative Eastern Ontario.

Southern Ontario Start-Up Forges its way onto the Up-and-Comers List

VoxNeuro, a Hamilton-based start-up, has earned its spot on the Branham300 list of Canada’s top 25 up-and-coming tech companies for 2019. The young company operates out of The Forge McMaster University’s start-up incubator and a FedDev Ontario funding recipient. VoxNeuro developed the world’s first real-time brain function assessment that provides clinicians with a customized rehabilitation plan for a faster, focused recovery. This is the first time that VoxNeuro has been included on the up-and-comers list, joining another FedDev Ontario-funding recipient, Kitchener’s Bridgit. The full Branham300 list features a number of other top ICT companies that received FedDev Ontario funding, including eSentire, NexJ Systems, ExactEarth, Thoughtwire, Alayacare, and Martello.

Simcoe, Grey & Bruce Counties’ Study Garners International Attention and Award

Business Retention and Expansion International (BREI) has recognized the efforts of regional partners to study the area’s agriculture and agri-food business climate. FedDev Ontario funding recipient, the Corporation of the County of Simcoe, received the 2019 Multi-Community with a Population over 100,000 Award at the BREI annual conference. The study was a true partnership between 47 municipalities, business support agencies and not-for-profits, including previous funding recipient Nottawasaga Futures. The study partners conducted standardized interviews with local agriculture and agri-food businesses to gain vital insights into opportunities and challenges to better support the sector.

Canada’s Top 50 FinTech Companies Include FDO-funded Projects

When the Digital Finance Institute released its Top 50 FinTech Companies in Canada for 2019 list, more than a few FedDev Ontario-funding recipients were named. Two of the FedDev Ontario-supported companies, cybersecurity firm eSentire and online-investment management firm Wealthsimple, have been recently making headlines and were featured on other prominent lists. The top 50 were selected based on factors that measured product innovation, disruption of a service, scalability and growth adoption. We acknowledge other current and past recipients Hockeystick, Finaeo, Koho, Lending Loop, Payment Rails, Ratehub.ca, Security Compass, Wave and Shopify, and congratulate all of the innovative Canadian companies who have made the list.

Canada proudly supports Fierté Montréal through the Canadian Experiences Fund. LGBTQ2 travellers will receive an extra warm welcome because of a $1-million investment by the federal government. Regional Development Agencies will join Fierté Canada Pride in supporting community Pride celebrations across the country.

Providing support for female entrepreneurs is good for business! FedDev Ontario funding through the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy is helping women across southern Ontario establish and run successful companies. Congratulations to the following recipients and thanks for helping grow Canada’s economy! @ventureLAB, @Haltech Regional Innovation Centre, @BaitCloud Fishing Corp, @Gala Bakery, @BestLifeRewarded Innovations, Shaw’s Ice Cream, Borm Capital, @Stiris Research Inc., @A Couple of Squares, @Scribendi Inc., DOZR Inc., @Reko International Group Inc. and @pillar-nonprofit-network.

Small projects have BIG impact in rural Eastern Ontario. With FedDev Ontario support through the Rural Innovation Initiative Eastern Ontario project, Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation is helping two local companies grow. Graphic Packaging International and Min-Tech will introduce advanced technology and innovative processes, resulting in over 60 new, full-time jobs.

New three-year partnership to strengthen Canada’s digital connections. Communitech and Rogers Communications are opening a 5G innovation lab this September in the Waterloo Region. The lab will focus on developing the technology required to help Canada secure a lead role in the digital economy.
