Manufacturing is the lifeblood of many rural communities. By embracing innovation, homegrown companies are finding ways to generate sustainable and inclusive growth within their community, strengthen regional competitiveness, and attract and retain skilled employees to the area. In the small town of Elmira, Ontario, Tri-Mach Group—a recognized leader in sanitary design and manufacturing—is making great strides to scale up and gain market share on a national level, with support from FedDev Ontario.

Since 1985, Tri-Mach has adapted and innovated to meet ever-changing industry safety standards. Because of its experience, knowledge, reputation and commitment to safety, many of Canada’s major processors of food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and personal health care products turn to Tri-Mach to help improve their processing environment, equipment, and sanitation procedures. Tri-Mach’s progressive solution is Ever-Kleen®, a sanitary conveyor system that employees can disassemble quickly, without using tools, to clean and sanitize thoroughly and frequently. Conveyors can be custom designed and built to meet specific production needs, and meet the highest standards in health and safety requirements.

With heightened industry safety standards, demand is steadily increasing for Tri-Mach’s sanitary conveyor systems across North America. FedDev Ontario’s investment of $2.1 million is helping Tri-Mach to meet market demand by scaling up operations at its 80,000-square-foot energy-efficient operating facility just outside of Waterloo. The installation of Factory Acceptance Testing lines and new wireless advanced manufacturing equipment has allowed the company to expand production capacity to take on larger sanitary conveyor projects. This project has led Tri-Mach to triple its supply chain spending in Ontario, recruit new talent to the area, and grow the team from 90 to 155 skilled employees.

“Our dedicated employees are the reason we have come this far, and thanks to FedDev Ontario’s support for our expansion, the reason we’ll go much further still. This FedDev Ontario investment has allowed us to increase our manufacturing capabilities, provide new state-of-the-art equipment and upgraded technology to help our customers remain leaders in their respective industries, keeping ahead of the demand curve,” says Krystal Darling, Chief Executive Officer, Tri-Mach Group.

Today, with three-time entrepreneur Krystal Darling at the helm, Tri-Mach’s sanitary expertise and products lines are used by Canadian household brands, including Maple Leaf Foods, Unilever, McNeil Personal Healthcare and Pepsi, to name a few. FedDev Ontario is proud to collaborate with this woman-led, forward-thinking and quality-driven manufacturer as it plans for the future and competes in new markets here in Canada and abroad.

“Tri-Mach Group has experienced growth above industry norms as a result of our hard work and dedication to providing cutting-edge products and services. With support from FedDev Ontario, our new 80,000-square-foot state-of-the-art manufacturing space will allow Tri-Mach to take on larger-scale turn-key projects and accommodate full factory testing of customer products. The company is excited about the benefits that the new operating facility is sure to bring in years to come,” says Ryan Martin, President, Tri-Mach Group.
